Achievements: 2003 Young Designers Merit Prize

2003 Young Designers Merit PrizeTiles is derived from the traditional Chinese game of Mahjong. The coffee table is a creation from an antithesis of a normal coffee table. The design intention prompts users to interact and experience the countless options and possiblities presented within the mahjong table. It not only provides a platform for interaction among those with common interest in the game, but also promotes an encouraging environment for multiple playing comforts to the preferences of its users. This brins about a sense of interest beyond the game itself; it also promotes a more energetic playing option.

This interactive furniture is designed to be compact and comprehensive in response to the space constraints experienced in most urban modern homes. It provides storage compartments for the mahjong tiles and cushiion settees.

Tiles can be converted into a mahjong table in the same manner alike flipping over a Mahjong tile, flipping over the coffee table surface to reveal the mahjong table on the other side. Cushion settees are hidden in trays, which can be pulled out easily.

Tiles cleverly demonstrates the intelligence of calculations and logical thinking in the creation of an ingenious game, presenting a furniture pice that relates the traditional lifestyle and cultures of the Chinese in context with our modern society.
